REPORT ON THE VISIT BY MS. ALISON HARLEY, DEAN FACULTY OF DESIGN, LASALLE-SIA COLLEGE OF THE ARTS, SINGAPORE TO IIFA AND HER MEETING WITH THE FACULTY MEMBERS AND STUDENTS
| |
Ms. Alison Harley made a formal visit to the International Institute of Fine Arts, Modinagar on the 5 th and 6 th of October 2006.
| |
As scheduled and planned, the meeting revolved around the Joint Foundation Programme between International Institute of Fine Arts, Modinagar and LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts, Singapore . The meeting was attended by faculty members- Mr. Pradeep Sen Gupta, Mr. Mahender Singh Baoni, Mr. Rajesh Sharma, Mr. Srikanta Paul, Ms. Khushboo Bharti and the Director Mr. K.S. Viswambhara.
The meeting initiated with the explanation of the course structure followed in LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts, Singapore by Ms. Alison Harley. She spoke about the manner in which a student
| progress from 0 Level (Foundation) with mainly 2D studies, 3D studies and contextual and contemporary studies as basic subjects. |
| |
| It was important that she mentioned the format of studies was daily scheduled and that all the studies in Foundation were interlinked so that a topic was decided and the students were asked to make a project based on that topic thus their 2D and 3D classes were complementary to the topic and also the contemporary and contextual studies were provided with the historical and theoretical background related to the topic. A student then progressed in his project and also submitted a written report or a short essay on his work. The student thus after completion of the Foundation course advanced to the Ist Year of his/ her chosen area of specialization and the same emphasis is given to their written ability. |
| |
In response to this, the faculty members of International Institute of Fine Arts also presented the various topics that a student is exposed to in his pursue of Foundation course in the International Institute of Fine Arts. It was mentioned that a student forges ahead through a grinding array of topics which enhance his understanding about the fundamentals of visual arts in 2D & 3D subjects such as Painting, Still Life, Life Study, Colour Theory, Design applications creative relief works, Clay, Scrap materials and Paper Designs, Drawing etc. The only area of possible difference in the course structure arose in the related subject of Art History and Aesthetics. It was unwittingly mentioned that since India has a long and ancient
| traditions and a very strong historical background, a student essentially has to learn about Indian history in Foundation as an entry point into the subject of Art History. It was also mentioned that International Institute of Fine Arts followed a weekly spread module of teaching in which a student completes a topic of study by engaging it throughout the week, both individual and group study (project based). |
| |
The meeting thus was fruitful as it became clear that a Joint Foundation Programme had every possibility of resuming its wings since there were not many differences in teaching methods and the course structure and even if a student completes his Foundation course in the Institute and then shifts to Singapore for further studies, he would be equipped with the same amount of a technical and fundamental knowledge about fine arts as a student from LASALLE-SIA Singapore. Since the essential ingredients of the course structure and the goal of both these institutes is to cater to the individual talent of each student, understand it and nurture it to the fullest.
The discussion concluded for the Day-1. |

At the end of the two days meeting, it can be safely mentioned that Ms. Alison Harley was assured to the quality of work that is being laboured out of the students. The meeting had a constructive outcome where the teaching staff and Ms. Alison agreed that the Joint Foundation Programme could be easily pushed ahead even if it is decided that the students complete the entire course from International Institute of Fine Arts, Modinagar itself.

| |
